Who are the conspiracy theorists, and who are "intellectuals"?

The blurring lines of credibility between the pro-establishment "intellectuals" and the anti-establishment "conspiracy theorists" is a terrific social shift.

Over three years ago, Sanjeev Bikhchandani Sir shared an article on some extraordinary work done by amateur journalists.

It’s still one of the most terrific pieces I’ve ever read. Mind blowing. The piece is about how a bunch of amateur journalists cracked the Covid origin story in the face of the mighty establishment and embarrassed all the powers that be.

I guess the lesson, which is now clear in hindsight (but was somehow figured out by these folks way ahead of the curve), is that the search for truth is often quite fuzzy in the formative stages. It is not as clear as some “established, peer reviewed studies”, and can not posture as a “settled debate”. Because swimming against the tide, and fighting the mighty establishment (for whatever reason) is a long and arduous journey which takes time.

And while the ones on the quest of digging out the truth might get labelled as “conspiracy theorists” or “illuminati believers”, by the pro establishment, condescending, pseudo-intellectual narcissists, they’re not wrong. In fact, more often than not, they’re right.

The same thing happens in different fields time and again.

Like in the world of money, back in 2008, when it turned out that the entire value chain in the financial ecosystem, (rating agencies and the government included), were in on the “scam”, the guys who turned out to be right were a bunch of “conspiracy nuts”, a.k.a the short sellers who bet against the system. They saw something others didn’t see at the time. And while they were equated with the “flat earthers” before everything unraveled, the real hats were the guys who said that they won’t believe in “conspiracy theories”.

The money world aside, a similar situation happened in the world of medicine in 2020. The so called “Conspiracy theorists” turned out to be right about so many things that the pro-establishment “intellectuals” were flat out wrong about. But even after so many wins, the so called “conspiracy theorists” are still the enemy. Why?

Perhaps because that’s how it’s meant to be. But probably, it’s the right time to see the pro-establishment “intellectuals” for what they really are.
